Covington is in the Northshore Louisiana region and part of St. Tammany Parish (what other states call a county). Known for its historic district and active art scene, Covington residents and visitors enjoy a small-town charm and modern amenities.

Getting There

Covington is about forty miles north of New Orleans and sixty miles east of Baton Rouge. Interstate 12 and U.S. Highway 190 are the primary routes to get there. Are you considering flying to the area? You will find that the Louis Armstrong Airport in New Orleans is the closest major airport, and a trip from there to Covington will take about an hour, depending on traffic.

Areas to Explore

Downtown – Downtown Covington is the hub for community activities. Residents and visitors enjoy Mardi Gras parades, antique car shows, annual celebrations, and year-round events. 

  • Fun Fact: You can find free off-street parking at “Ox Lots” (public parking) locations throughout the downtown area. Not only are the Ox Lots a great modern convenience, but they are also historic. Ox Lots were once used as trade locations for local farmers who would bring goods to sell and trade on carts and wagons pulled by oxen. 

Things to Do

  • Covington Trailhead – This community gathering spot hosts local farmers’ markets and events throughout the year. It is a great place to relax, enjoy live music, and meet with friends and family for local events.
  • HJ Smith & Sons General Store and Museum – A historical general store that still offers a variety of hardware and housewares items, this downtown location is one of the most photographed landmarks in the area. Take a walk through the museum to get an idea of what local life in the 19th century might have been for residents of this small town.
  • Canoeing on the Bogue Falaya River: Rent a canoe and paddle down the Bogue Falaya River for a first-hand look at Louisiana’s river landscape and wildlife.

Covington’s downtown area is home to charming antique shops with friendly owners and staff ready to help.   • Three Rivers Art Festival – Held every November, you will find more than two hundred artist booths sprinkled throughout the streets of downtown Covington. This Art Festival is a great event to explore and discover your next favorite art find.  
  • Columbia Street Block Party – On the last Friday of each month, from March to October, downtown Covington is the place to find classic cars and the people who love them. This family-friendly event is a local favorite.
