Here in Louisiana, we have a real love for food and artisan goods so it’s not surprising that we enjoy the fusion of artistry and baking. But when a cake makes you think of something your mom or grandmother used to bake, you connect on a whole different level.

That’s how we were introduced to Doodlebug’s Dessert Bar and what made us want to learn more about Terry King. Get to know a little more about Terry in the brief interview we share below.

Louisiana Ladies – Have you always lived in Louisiana?

Terry King – I’ve lived in Louisiana all but maybe a year. I was born in New Orleans and lived in Harahan for the first 2 years until the family moved to Metairie. Once my youngest graduated high school, we moved to Hammond.

Louisiana Ladies – What’s something you enjoy about your community?

Terry King – We have great neighbors, not a lot of traffic, it’s just so peaceful.

Louisiana Ladies – Your cakes have been described as being like mom (or grandma) use to make. How does it make you feel when someone says your baking makes them think of someone special?

Terry King – It’s a great feeling. I always want my baking to create memories, but for it to remind someone of a special time or a special person, that’s the best compliment.

Louisiana Ladies – Is there a family member who inspired you to become a baker?

Terry King – Not one, growing up in a single-parent home, with a mom who worked up to 3 jobs at a time, there wasn’t much time for homemade anything.

Louisiana Ladies – Do you have memories of baking with your family?

Terry King – I wish I could say yes, but there were none. That’s why it’s so important for me to bake with my grandkids; for them to have good and fun memories with me.

Louisiana Ladies – When did you first consider making this your business?

Terry King – In the past 3 years and I have seen the business grow.

Louisiana Ladies – How did you come up with Doodlebug’s Dessert Bar as your business name?

Terry King – My oldest grandson Lennox, I called him my Doodlebug. I wanted to bake more than just cakes and cookies, I wanted a variety. Like in a bar, there is always a variety of drinks.

Louisiana Ladies – Tell us something you enjoy about being an entrepreneur.

Terry King – I don’t feel quite there yet, but as of now, that I control what I bake, my hours, and my schedule.

Louisiana Ladies – What project have you had the most fun working on?

Terry King – I would have to say my grandkids’ birthday cakes. I always want to be creative.

Louisiana Ladies – What’s the biggest project you’ve worked on?

Terry King – Because I want my grandkids to have the best of the best I would have to say their parties.

Louisiana Ladies – We consider what you do to be a fusion of baking and art, artisan sweets if you will. What inspires you to create from a design point of view?

Terry King – My imagination, sometimes I have to reel it in. Once someone tells me a theme, my mind just wonders until come up with all kinds of ideas.

Louisiana Ladies – You offer a variety of desserts and treats. Can you tell us what those are?

Terry King – My menu has a variety of cakes, cookies (decorated), gourmet cookies cake pops, cake push-ups, brownies, Krispy treats, cake jars, meringue cookies, and cocoa bombs – just to name a few.

Louisiana Ladies – What type of events do you cater?

Terry King – Any celebration from birthday parties, weddings, office parties, and any occasion.

Louisiana Ladies – If you could go back and give yourself one tip about being in business, what would it be?

Terry King – Do not let anyone talk you out of it. Focus and press forward.
